503rd Stingers (503º Pungiglioni) is a Alliance Insignia Western Alliance squadron in Starlancer.

Background[ | ]

Italy's 503rd was decimated at the beginning of the conflict. In the massive sneak attack by the newly formed Coalition, most of the Italian and French fleets were completely wiped out. The Stingers survived only because they were on a scheduled stand down, with about half of their unit on mandatory leave as the war broke out. They are currently based at Fort Lomax, and are anxious for a measure of revenge. This crack unit has a kill ratio of about 2-1, and is known for its "take no prisoners" approach to battle.

The Stingers were wiped out on February 2, 2161, when they made a valiant attempt to destroy what was believed to be the carrier CS Krelov and its fighters. The Stingers, however, were all but destroyed and the remnants of the squadron have withdrawn awaiting further reinforcements. Reports suggested pilots were gunned down in their ejection pods, leading to outrage among Alliance Senators[1] (silently ignoring the fact that the Stingers themselves never took prisoners either).[2]

Trivia[ | ]

  • Some squadrons have beta descriptions leftover in the files:
Italy's 503rd was decimated at the beginning of the conflict. In the massive sneak attack by the newly formed Eastern Coalition, most of the Italian and French fleets were completely wiped out. The Stingers survived only because they were on a scheduled stand down. About half of their unit was on mandatory leave as the war broke out. They are currently based at Fort Lomax, and are anxious for a measure of revenge. The Stingers are one of the most decorated units in the war. They have 6 confirmed aces in their squad, and several more that are unconfirmed. This crack unit has a kill ratio of about 5-1, and is known for its take no prisoners approach to battle.

  1. Transcripts: "February 2, 2161 At the trial of the alleged traitor, Colonel Pierre Besson, the prosecution presented their charges. The most notable was that Besson passed on the location and activities of the Alliance Fleet before the onset of the war, which gave the Coalition the element of surprise. If found guilty, he is likely to be sentenced to death. In another report, the Italian 503 squadron known as the Stingers encountered a heavily defended Coalition convoy. The Stingers made a valiant attempt to destroy what was believed to be the carrier CS Krelov and its fighters. The Stingers, however, were all but destroyed and the remnants of the squadron have withdrawn awaiting further reinforcements. There is no news of survivors. Reports suggest pilots were gunned down in their ejection pods before the convoy moved on. Once again the Coalition has illustrated its disregard for any code of military conduct or human rights. Alliance Senators expressed outrage and have vowed to bring those responsible to justice. At this time, however, our thoughts must go to the families of those brave servicemen and women."
